Dyslexia

讀寫障礙

Dyslexia is a type of specific learning difficulty. It is common in Hong Kong, affecting approximately 9 to 12% of schoolchildren, and ranges from mild to severe. It is primarily caused by congenital differences in brain structure and function.

Despite normal intelligence and adequate learning experience, they have difficulty reading and writing. They are unable to recognise and dictate words accurately and fluently.

Does your child show the following symptoms?

❐ Oral expression is stronger than written expression

Reading is not fluent, and there are frequent misreadings, forgetting pronunciations, or skipping words

❐ Despite effort, the child still has difficulty copying or writing from memory words they have learned
❐ When copying, the student often omits or adds strokes
❐ The student reverses the components of characters horizontally or writes them as mirror images
❐ The child tires easily and needs extra concentration to complete reading and writing tasks
❐ Poor fine motor coordination makes it difficult to hold a pen. Exercise books often show frequent erasing and corrections

If parents suspect their child has dyslexia, they can schedule a consultation with an occupational therapist at our center for further evaluation and to arrange relevant training.

  • The occupational therapist will conduct an interview, clinical observation, and assessment using professional assessment tools.

  • A meeting will be held with parents before the assessment to understand the child's learning situation.

  • After the assessment, the results will be explained to the parents, and an effective guidance and training plan will be provided based on the child's specific situation. Parents will also receive guidance on disciplining their child and managing stress.

Courses and Training

To help children with specific learning difficulties, we first need to understand their
challenges and accept their difficulties. With patience, we help them identify their
strengths and weaknesses. Through systematic and continuous teaching and training,
we support them in overcoming their learning obstacles.

Sensory integration group

Improve their learning ability
through sensory integration therapy, gross and fine motor muscle training, and spatial training.

iLs Listening Therapy

Auditory therapy can stabilize the nervous system,
thereby regulating auditory sensitivity and concentration, and improving learning efficiency.

Literacy Group

Teach children to recognize Chinese characters according to their features, such as character structure, radicals, and phonetic components, based on each child’s individual needs.

SEN Primary 1 Adaptation Class

Helps children adapt to and integrate into the primary school environment as early as possible, supporting them through the kindergarten-to-primary transition and reducing stress for both children and parents.

Treatment

The difficulties children with dyslexia face in reading and writing can affect academic
performance, learning progress, and motivation. This can lead to low self-confidence,
poor self-image, and may even trigger other emotional difficulties. While there is currently no medication to treat dyslexia, early identification followed by suitable educational and counselling interventions is the most effective approach.

  • Sensory Integration Training

A series of sensory-based activities is used to improve a child’s physical coordination, organization, and sequencing abilities, helping to enhance pencil grip posture and pressure, as well as the accuracy and speed of reading and copying.

  • Occupational Therapy

Assessment of fine motor and handwriting abilities, training to improve handwriting skills, and exercises to strengthen executive functioning.

  • Speech Therapy

Different intervention approaches are used to help individuals with dyslexia overcome their fear of written language.
